Congratulations, You’re Going to the Island!
Harry is sorted by a non-living object.
PS/SS – The Sorting Hat
QUOTE
“Potter, Harry!”
As Harry stepped forward, whispers suddenly broke out like little hissing fires all over the hall.
“Potter, did she say?”
“The Harry Potter?”
The last thing Harry saw before the hat dropped over his eyes was the hall full of people craning to get a good look at him. Next second he was looking at the black inside of the hat. He waited.
“Hmm,” said a small voice in his ear. “Difficult. Very difficult. Plenty of courage, I see. Not a bad mind either. There’s talent, oh my goodness, yes—and a nice thirst to prove yourself, now that’s interesting….So where shall I put you?”
Harry gripped the edges of the stool and thought, Not Slytherin, not Slytherin.
“Not Slytherin, eh?” said the small voice. “Are you sure? You could be great, you know, it’s all here in your head, and Slytherin will help you on the way to greatness, no doubt about that—no? Well, if you’re sure—better be GRYFFINDOR!”
Harry heard the hat shout the last word to the whole hall. He took off the hat and walked shakily toward the Gryffindor table. He was so relieved to have been chosen and not put in Slytherin, he hardly noticed that he was getting the loudest cheer yet. Percy the Prefect got up and shook his hand vigorously, while the Weasley twins yelled, “We got Potter! We got Potter!” Harry sat down opposite the ghost in the ruff he’d seen earlier. The ghost patted his arm, giving Harry the sudden, horrible feeling he’d just plunged it into a bucket of ice-cold water.”

The Sorting Hat places Harry into Gryffindor, one of the four houses at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizarding.
GoF – Goblet of Fire
QUOTE
Harry sat there, aware that every head in the Great Hall had turned to look at him. He was stunned. He felt numb. He was surely dreaming. He had not heard correctly.
There was no applause. A buzzing, as though of angry bees, was starting to fill the Hall; some students were standing up to get a better look at Harry as he sat, frozen, in his seat.
Up at the top table, Professor McGonagall had got to her feet and swept past Ludo Bagman and Professor Karkaroff to whisper urgently to Professor Dumbledore, who bent his ear toward her, frowning slightly.
Harry turned to Ron and Hermione; beyond them, he saw the long Gryffindor table all watching him, openmouthed.
“I didn’t put my name in,” Harry said blankly. “you know I didn’t.”
Both of them stared just as blankly back.
At the top table, Professor Dumbledore had straightened up, nodding to Professor McGonagall.
“Harry Potter!” he called again. “Harry! Up here, if you please!”
“Go on,” Hermione whispered, giving Harry a slight push.
Harry got to his feet, trod on the hem of his robes, and stumbled slightly. He set off up the gap between the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff tables. It felt like an immensely long walk; the top table didn’t seem to be getting any nearer at all, and he could feel hundreds and hundreds of eyes upon him, as though each were a searchlight. The buzzing grew louder and louder. After what seemed like an hour, he was right in front of Dumbledore, feeling the stares of all the teachers upon him.
“Well…through the door, Harry,” said Dumbledore. He wasn’t smiling.
Harry moved off along the teachers’ table. Hagrid was seated right at the end. He did not wink at Harry, or wave, or give any of his usual signs of greeting. He looked completely astonished and stared at Harry as he passed like everyone else.

The Goblet of Fire sorts Harry to be the fourth Triwizard Champion.
DH – The Order
Both the Sorting Hat and the Goblet of Fire sort the students into their respective categories by considering each one individually, the only difference being that when Harry was sorted into Gryffindor, he heard how the Sorting Hat was basing its decision; where as the Goblet of Fire silently chose the champions. In PS/SS, Harry was excited and happy with his placement into Gryffindor house. Harry's astonishment and anxiety during GoF came from his placement as the fourth Triwizard champion.
Since Dumbledore’s death in HBP, there have been many speculations as to who would be left to lead the Order of the Phoenix. Will it be someone Dumbledore had hand picked? Will it be the next highest-ranking Order member under Dumbledore? Will the character with the strongest personality naturally rise into the position of leadership? Will the other Order members vote to elect their next leader? Will there not be a leader for the Order because no one can agree? Will it be Harry?
There is an object that will chose the next leader of the Order, that person will be Harry. He’ll be able to “put his name in” and he will be chosen. Each sorting places Harry in a level of “importance”, at least relative to his thinking. He was sorted into Gryffindor House which he thought was the best out of all four houses and he admired those who would be holding the title of Triwizard Champion. |
